Slaves toiled over Shang structures for many years with little reward. Even as thousands-year-old ruins from an ancient Chinese capital, these walls still stand strong!
HOW DID THE SHANG PEOPLE PREVENT AND TREAT ILLNESS?
When we get sick, we blame an infection. The Shang believed that people got sick after upsetting an ancestor or after an evil spirit entered their bodies. In order to be cured, patients needed to please their ancestors or get rid of the demon. A type of healer called a shaman would sometimes consult oracle bones to find out which ancestors were angry and how to make them happy. Shamans also drove away the evil spirits through âexorcisms,â a ritual in which they ordered the spirit to leave the body.
